Space 2101: STEAM-focused camp blasts off at KAUST

Changing the game on the early adoption of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) related skills, KAUST is launching the Kingdom’s inaugural Space 2101 camp. Creating a window of opportunity for Saudi youth, KAUST will be the Mission Control Center for approximately 200 talented Saudi students, from across the Kingdom, for the globally recognized Space 2101 program.

The Space 2101 camp delivers on KAUST's vision as a destination for scientific and technological education and research, putting the University at the forefront of stimulating innovation and inspiring future generations in the Kingdom's space sector.

For five days, KAUST and its Founding Partner, the Saudi Space Commission (SSC), will present NASA and SpaceX astronauts, as well as world-renowned educators, to work alongside students aged 12-15 as they learn about:

  • Design thinking as an innovation tool
  • 3-D modelling and design
  • Coding, microcontrollers and sensors
  • Mental and physical health matters in space
  • Presentation and public speaking skills

The goal is for teams to create habitat models that could be used either in outer space or on Mars. The camp will culminate with a competition where a panel of astronauts, scientists and industry experts will judge the various habitat designs. The winning team will travel to Florida, U.S.A., to watch a live launch at the Kennedy Space Center.

The SSC naturally emerged as an ideal Founding Partner for the Space 2101 program based on its strategic alignment with KAUST and a shared emphasis on proactively developing the Kingdom’s future STEAM leadership.
